Harrogate In The Past

Probably more than in any other period in history, our major towns and cities have undergone considerable change. Fortunately in the case of Harrogate, much of the town’s architecture and colorful gardens were recorded on film, together with important civic events by skillful film-makers.

This complication of archive footage from the 1920’s to the 1970’d, includes historic occasions such as the visit by the Lord Mayor of London in 1939 at the opening of the annex to the Royal Bath’s and the visit in 1929 of the Duke of York to the Great Yorkshire Show. We see rare footage of Harrogate’s Coronation celebration’s of 1937 and many splendid color films from the 1950’s of life in the town. Everyday scenes within Harrogate’s streets gives us rare glimpses of motor vehicles of the time, shops, the old railway station and the variety of fashions worn by its people.

We see archives of some of the villages around around Harrogate and visit Ripon and Pateley bridge. The town’s railway station and long-gone good yard and parcels services are seen to good effect!
