Opening Scene: 34039 Boscastle and 35005 Canadian Pacific double-head southwards on the GCR main line across a winter wonderland.
The First Train: New Year’s Day 1993 witnessed a blanket of frost over Southern England, a perfect backdrop for the Kent & East Sussex Railway’s AIX tank to be launched with its one coach train.
South Coast Changes: A study over the past four years of the last part of the Sussex Coast main line to lose its semaphore signals and crossing gates. Before and after scenes are shown at Fishbourne and Bosham, with freight from Lavant and crossings at Black Boy, Inlands Road and Clay Lane.
Cab Ride – South Merseyrail: A ‘balloon’ trip from West Kirby to New Brighton, including the tunnel loop under the Mersey and Liverpool.
BR Newslines: Featuring Birmingham’s ‘XCity’ line under the wires, 323201 at Bletchley, ‘Networkers’ at work, 153 at Salisbury, ‘DC Tours’ with 20s and 31s, two 50s in Birmingham, the very last train to Redmire, Blythe diversions and a Continental freight at Stratford, with ‘SNCF’ 90130.
GCR Winter: Frost-encrusted trees and shrubs, sleepers and signals provide the backdrop to 34039 Bocastle, 35005 Canadian Pacific, 4472 Flying Scotsman and 60532 Blue Peter, double-headed and single, together iwth 5224 on the Windcutter.
Preservation Focus: Extended coverage of the Bluebell’s ‘new’ S15 No 847, ‘the last Freight’ on the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway, with ‘Swiftsure’ giving steam haulage to the very last Fitzgerald Lighting train and ‘Maude’ at Bo’ness on a freight on Remembrance Sunday.
Main Line Steam: Action ranging from 60009 and 44871 in Scotland, 4498 on the S&C, 70000 and 71000 at Didcot, ‘6999’ at Didcot and to Oxford, 46521 in the Cotswolds and Chilterns and 6024 and 46203 from Hall Green to Stratford.
