Contents: Opening Scene: 92203 on what could be a Somerset & Dorset ‘Pines Express’, actually at Burrs.
Steam Feast: The East Lancashire Railway’s month-long ‘Festival of Steam’ in August, featuring fifteen locomotives, including many double headers. We go from locomotive preparation at the new Buckley Wells shed to the ‘main line’ with the many visitors including 92203, 2857, 3822, 35005, 6998, L99, 46441, 5407, 53809, 30506, 76079, 54, 45596, 5593 and 48431.
Copy Pit Copy: On 3 August 1968 the last steam banker ran over the Copy Pit route, using 48278. In August 1993 she was resurrected from the dead and her duty re-enacted, with 48431 in disguise, suitably inscribed ‘The End’.
Green of Scots: Perhaps the most unexpected BR recreation was 60103 Flying Scotsman. Here we see the ‘Queen of Green’ on the Torbay to Dartmouth line, facing both north and south and turning together with a statement on its main line future from Pete Waterman.
The Last Train – Again!: Thirty years ago the ‘last’ steam passenger train was run over the Severn Valley line by BR, with Panniers 4665 and 9624. Thirty years (less three minutes) later, the Severn Valley re-ran the train.
Midland Great Northern Centenary: Yet more celebrations! The North Norfolk Railway, operating the last surviving part of the MGN celebrated in style, with visiting ‘Jinty’ 47383, the NRM J52 number 1247 and the ‘Rocket’ replica. The MGN ochre livery reappears on Andrew Barclay No 2107 and ‘Rocket’ climbs Weybourne Bank.
Preservation News Focus: Other railway’s happenings, including the visit of 41712 to Wallingford, 4422 at Embsay, a ‘new’ USA 2-8-0 at Grosmont, two Princesses at Swanwick Junction, 78022 and 46441 double-heading at the KWVR and the black L&Y 2F 52322 at Carnforth.
Main Line Steam: Intense activity, as always. 46441s debut, 48151 at Silverdale, 4498 and 46203 on the S&C, 92203 ‘Black Prince’ approaching Burrs, 80079 at Thorpe Culvert (with the somersault!), Eastleigh’s S15 E828s surprise main line debut to Yeovil, 34027 from Exeter, 6024 and 70000 in the Cotswolds and finally the ’15 Guinea Special’ re-run, with 46229, 45595 and 44871.
