Opening Scene: Steam in the Highlands! 44871 departs from Dalwhinnie on her odyssey to Inverness.
Welsh Doubles: Consecutively numbered 80079 and 80080 made history when they double-headed through the heart of Wales, both to Aberystwyth and over Sugar Loaf into South Wales.
Setting the Standards: The Mid-Hants changed its image a little in October, when it fielded four Standard machines for its Autumn Gala. Newly restored 73096 had to share the honours with visiting 70000 and 92203 as well as its little sister 76017.
Silcock Locals: These are anything but ‘Silcock Expresses’ – Geoff Silcock arranged for Swanage’s M7 to make a test run to Corfe with the Maunsell local set and then went to the Dean Forest to run a real BR era pick-up freight.
Scottish Steam Autumn: Two Pacifics and two Black 5s starred north of the border this Autumn. We recorded 60532 Blue Peter on successful and unsuccessful tours, 60009 on driver training and both of them celebrating ‘Glasgow-Edinburgh 150’. The return of Black 5s 44871 and 44767 from Fort William leads us on to the former’s success on the East Kilbride branch and the assault on Druimochter, on her way to Inverness.
Diesel Autumn Galas: No less than five Class 50s starred on the Paignton & Dartmouth’s Gala, so we see 50 002, 50 007, 50 033, 50 042 and D400 in sunny Devon. In Lancashire two ‘Warships’ worked together, whilst electric E3003 made its first preservation run. In Somerset the West Somerset displayed two Hymeks, as well as a Class 20 in original green. Finally the joint Peak Rail and Butterley diesel gala is covered.
Preserved Steam Focus: Steam still holds sway for most railways! We cover the return of E1 0-6-0T B110 on the East Somerset, 60103s visit to the GWR, the Severn Valley’s 48-hour Gala, many ‘Kings’ at Didcot and the GCR Autumn Gala.
Main Line Steam: All the rest of the main line steam scene, from 71000s return, 48151 to Scarborough, 70047 and E828 at Eastleigh, 45596 at Holyhead again and 34027s latest ‘ban breaker’ – steaming on the third rail in daylight.
Cover Photo: 44871 on the East Kilbride Line.
