How They Lived in the Yorkshire Dales
£9.99How They Lived in the Yorkshire Dales is a comprehensive account by famous Dales writer W. R. Mitchell MBE who was editor of the Dalesman magazine for many years. Bill’s wanderings around the Dales over many decades gave him a great wealth of knowledge as he went to visit ordinary folk in the villages and farms of the area. He was able to write about their lives and tales and this book encompasses many of his findings of life in the Yorkshire Dales.
154 pages with illustrations £9.99
W.R. Mitchell
W.R. ‘Bill’ Mitchell joined the Dalesman magazine in 1949, starting a journalistic career inspired by owner Harry Scott’s adage ‘put people before things.’ He took over as editor from Scott in 1968, a position he held for eighteen years. As well as editing Dalesman and its sister publication Cumbria, Bill had a prodigious output extending across over two hundred books, innumerable articles and countless lectures. His thirst for knowledge and a keen listening ear made him an expert on many topics. He had the skill of putting often-reticent Dales folk at their ease, his interviews reflecting a bygone age and remaining for posterity in the W.R. Mitchell Archive.
In 1996 Bill was awarded the MBE for his services to journalism in Yorkshire and Cumbria and received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the university of Bradford. In 2007 he was awarded a Golden Eagle Award from the Outdoor Writers’ and Photographers’ Guild which cited him as one of the founding fathers of outdoor writing. Two years later he was voted ‘Greatest Living Icon’ for the Yorkshire Dales National Park in a poll to mark the 60th anniversary of the National Parks.
In 2010 he won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dalesman Rural Award ceremony, receiving the award from another advocate of the countryside, John Craven. Bill’s work for Dalesman over four decades is arguably the defining feature of an illustrious career.
Bill died in 2015, aged 87.

Ipswich to Lowestoft Cab Ride
£17.95Ipswich to Lowestoft
All aboard the cab of Anglia Railways 150255 for the 09.19
service from Ipswich to Lowestoft on 20th August 2001.
Soon after departing Ipswich we cross the main line at East
Suffolk junction and join the branch here for Lowestoft. First stop
is Westerfield where a problem occurs with collecting the Electric
Token so the driver progresses a little further long the platform to
obtain a signal and the token obtained.
Progressing along this particularly delightful branch line, we
pass over no less than 51 level crossings and cross over the
famous swing bridge at Oulton Broad.
There is a combination of half barriers, with some full barriers
and just ‘open’ crossings with lights and sirens. We run onto the
single line section to Melton and then Wickham Market and
Saxmundham where a token exchange occurs again.
Darsham and Halesworth and then Beccles and Oulton Broad
South are reached before crossing the swing bridge to join the
line from Norwich from the left and enter Lowestoft.
